A member of a surgical team who suffered a back injury while manoeuvring a patient has received compensation after help from his trade union the GMB.

The 49-year-old from Cornwall has been left with long term back pain following the accident while working at Derriford Hospital.

Following his diagnosis he contacted his trade union, the GMB, for advice which instructed its lawyers Thompsons Solicitors to investigate a claim for compensation.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust admitted liability and settled the claim out of court for £21,500.

Chris Jeffery from the GMB added: “This member has been left with long term back problems which are likely to effect both his work and personal life well into the future.”

Sarah Dowell from Thompsons Solicitors said: “Lifting is a common cause of back injuries and employers must make sure that both training in the correct lifting techniques and an assessment of environment where objects are being lifted is taken into consideration.”
