Specialist asbestos team
A dedicated team of lawyers is working with trade union, the GMB, to ensure people suffering from asbestos related diseases in Cumbria can claim compensation.
Thompsons Solicitors’ specialist asbestos team is working on behalf GMB Northern to make sure its members, who have been exposed to asbestos in the workplace, can make use of its free legal service to gain compensation.
The move comes after Thompsons recovered more than £1m in asbestos related disease claims for families in Cumbria during the last 18 months.
In Cumbria thousands of workers were exposed to asbestos dust while building ships for the former Vickers yard in Barrow, now owned by BAE Systems.
Many others were exposed to asbestos during their employment in factories, building sites and even in schools and canteens.
Asbestos related diseases
Thompsons’ asbestos team provides expert legal assistance to people with mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural plaques.
Tom Brennan, regional secretary of GMB Northern said: "We are pleased to work with Thompsons Solicitors to ensure our members who have been exposed to asbestos in the work place can claim compensation".
"Many of our members and former members have developed asbestos-related conditions, we believe they should be compensated accordingly. The GMB will support them".
"I hope our members in Cumbria make the most of the unions free legal service and would urge anyone who thinks they have a claim to contact GMB."
Head of Thompsons Solicitors national asbestos litigation team, Ian McFall said: "During the last year the compensation we have won has made a real difference to people in the Cumbria area, many who are sick and dying after being exposed to asbestos during their working lives".
"We look forward to working with GMB to support their members and past members, who have been exposed to asbestos, and their families, to claim compensation."
Asbestos disease diagnosis? Talk to us for advice and support on how to secure compensation.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, we can support you with advice on how to make a claim.
The process will be explained in plain English and with no obligation – our priority is to provide you with the best, expert advice on whether you have a valid case for compensation, and to signpost you to further sources of support.
There are strict time limits applied to making a claim – usually three years from the date of diagnosis. It doesn’t matter if the exposure to asbestos took place – as it often does – decades ago, the three year time limit applies to the date of knowledge of diagnosis or date of death.
