The organisation aims to help communities to work together to address problems including employment and housing
A new organisation is being launched to help boost community feeling across Sheffield on Saturday, January 16, 2010.
The Sheffield Community Participation Project will be launched at the GMB’s offices in Norfolk Street from 11am to 2pm.
The organisation aims to help communities to work together to address problems including employment and housing.
It will raise awareness of how trade unions can provide support and will campaign for the right to a voice for all.
Organised by the GMB, TUC and Thompsons Solicitors it hopes to connect local communities with the trade union movement to highlight unequal employment opportunities, encourage non-workers to retrain and to campaign on issues like social welfare and improved housing.
Nikki Sharpe from Thompsons Solicitors said: “Community participation is one of the key ingredients of an empowered community. Participation is the heart that pumps the community’s life blood.
We hope by running this conference we can begin to build a truly powerful community in Sheffield.”
Speakers at the project launch will include Tim Roache, regional secretary of the GMB in Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, Nikki Sharpe from Thompsons Solicitors and John Lewis from the TUC, and Joan Keane GMB Equality & Inclusion and Piotr Plonka GMB Project Worker.
The event will be held at the GMB’s offices in Thorne House, Norfolk St, Sheffield from 11am on Saturday, January 16. It is open to all.
